Saturnia hot springs and a ride through the tuscan hills
The quest for a great Italian outdoor hot tub (aka hot springs)
One thing to know about me is that I really enjoy water! My happy place is playing in the ocean, on a boat of sorts, stand up paddleboarding, or in a nice hot tub (with snow falling around you is a bonus). So much so that my quest for adventures of the aquatic variety have gotten me into some hot water in my time (pun absolutely intended). On a recent adventure to Italy with my partner I had a few solo travel days and decided on seeking out a water like activity!
If you are anything like me you get a lot of your travel inspiration from the ‘gram. This is where I first heard about the beautiful Saturnia Hot Springs!
I knew I had to go! I was not deterred by the fact that I would be driving almost 3 hours there and back. I was not deterred by driving the Italian highways at night. I was not deterred by the fact that I do not drive stick (more on this!). I was not deterred when I took a wrong turn (I turned it to a right turn into a vineyard). I was not deterred by the fact that I was alone. The theme here is clear, I was not deterred! Thank goodness because I had a great time and learned a lot about the Italian countryside and myself!
Saturnia is located in the Tuscan country-side and not easily accessible by anything but a car! I am from Canada and only drive automatic… and this is one of the major lessons learned from traveling in Europe (not just this specific adventure). Renting a car abroad will get a lot more expensive… and that is if you can find one! I ended up having to take the train to a different town to rent a car - yikes! After the trip I vowed to learn how to drive standard before my next trip abroad.
I will not forget turning the corner and seeing the springs for the first time, it was stunning! One thing I discovered when I arrived at the Saturnia hot springs was that there are no change rooms! Luckily I am a bit industrious and I highly recommend you bring an extra towel (or even 2) to manufacture your own change room (a proud moment for me)!
While the ultimate goal was Saturnia, the drive itself was incredible! Once off the major highways the drive was fun, through the rolling hills and vineyards. I made sure to stop for a wine tasting and picked up a couple bottles of wine along the way! After visiting the hot springs it was getting late and the sun was setting. I had to pull over and just sit an watch the sunset over all the vineyards in solitude - incredible! I would do this again in a heartbeat!
Any trip that challenges me and I was able to remind myself of my own independence and problem solving skills and outlook on life! Did I get lost, or did I discover a beautiful winery I may not have otherwise found? I also put my building skills to work on a kick-ass change room. And… I will be learning to drive standard to make my travel easier. It was incredible, plus a great Instagram photo was taken!
