5 Tips for an AWESOME day trip!

Become a tourist in your own backyard!

I LOVE my home here in beautiful Canada, there are so many activities and we often forget how fortunate we are! I am sure you may be in a similar situation, how easy to forget the awesome adventures available in your backyard!

In that spirit my partner and I decided to have a nice day trip with our dog right outside of the city! The weather has gotten so much warmer and we needed to be outside and we decided to pack a picnic and head out to Glenbow Ranch! I had never been and it turned out to be a really awesome day! See below for 5 tips to creating a super awesome local getaway!

1. Pack a Picnic!

I LOVE cheese, I would consider it a passion of mine. We decided to hit up our local market and picked up some meat and cheese... we brought some tasty beverages to pair nicely with the cheese!

It may not look super fancy but any charcuterie picnic complete with multiple cheeses, red pepper jelly, and Hungarian salami… I AM IN (and of course that is not canned wine, no alcohol is allowed in Provincial parks)

2. Over prepare rather than under prepare

It may only be a day trip, but you want to be comfortable and prepared! We are avid hikers and Cam still got a blister on this trip. ‘Luckily’ he is a bit of a nut when it comes to being prepared and we were more than all set! It is important to be dressed super comfortably and wear layers. I personally like to ensure I have the below in my back pack:

-Sunscreen (https://amzn.to/2D7mE44)

-First Aid kit (https://amzn.to/2X5w07Y)

-Ice Cleats during Fall/Winter/Spring just in case (these are light weight! - https://amzn.to/2X1AwUX)

-Face Spray (I bring this everywhere - https://amzn.to/2P4a4qY, I am a face spray FIEND and it feels so nice if your hike works up a sweat!)

3. Research and Plan Your Trip

I had never been to the Glenbow Ranch before in my life despite it being a 40 minute drive from home! The pathways were fun and the views were incredible. Do a few quick google searches and find a new place to explore near you!

4. Bring your camera/phone

And USE it! People make an effort to come and explore Calgary and the surrounding area, and it’s important to appreciate what you have and the memories you create! I made an effort to document this trip and without doing this I wouldn’t have been able to capture this magical moment:

This has to be the least flattering photo ever taken of PaulaAnka (and perhaps also my favorite)

5. End your trip at PaulaAnka’s favorite brewery (you know what they say, happy dog happy owners!)

… Alright fine maybe not every day trip needs to end in a brewery… but it does make it a better day, no?

I would love to hear from you! Do you have any go-to day trip adventures you like? Have any hidden gems no matter where you are? Sound off in the comments below as our adventure complete with Saskatoon Berry Saisons begins!
